We’re Grateful for the Spotlight on Hospice Care – As Seen on ITV Meridian
We were pleased to be featured on ITV Meridian yesterday evening in a segment highlighting the ongoing funding crisis in hospice care. The piece provided a vital platform to share the challenges we face as a charity delivering free, hospice-at-home services to local families.
Watch the show here. It is the second segment to air.
Our Head of Fundraising was joined by one of our patients, a dedicated volunteer and fundraiser, and a representative from Hospice UK. Together, we helped shine a light on the reality behind the headlines – the growing demand for hospice care and the increasing difficulty in meeting that demand without secure, sustainable funding.
The government’s response in the programme referred to the £100 million recently set aside for hospice funding. While we welcome any investment in the hospice sector, it is important to clarify – as the broadcast segment did not – that this funding is limited strictly to capital expenditure. That means it cannot be used for core costs such as paying for nurses, delivering care, or keeping vital services running day to day.
Like many hospices across the country, we rely heavily on charitable donations and community support to cover our running costs. The need is growing, and without further action and a clear commitment to fund core hospice care, services like ours remain under significant pressure.
We are grateful to ITV Meridian for giving airtime to this crucial issue, and we thank our patient and volunteer for sharing their stories so openly. We hope this coverage will inspire wider awareness, understanding, and support for hospice care in our region and beyond.
